I finally figured out why my plants kept dying in the corner of my apartment.
For months I was watering them on a strict schedule, but they just got worse. Then I moved one to a different spot for a week and it perked up, so I bought a $15 light meter and found the corner only gets 50 foot-candles, not the 200 my succulents need. How do you check light levels in your place without buying a gadget?

Just use your phone's camera. The shadow test is free and works fine for most plants.

Phone cameras don't measure actual light, just shadows.

That 2000 lumens figure you threw out last week really made me stop and think. I used to believe phone cameras captured something close to real brightness, but after testing a few plants with mine I see what you mean. The shadows are definitely doing more of the work than I ever realized.
