TIL my grocery store throws out over 200 lbs of produce a day
I was talking to a stocker at my local Kroger last night and he casually mentioned the nightly dumpster load. It's all stuff that's just past the 'sell by' date but still totally fine. Now I feel guilty every time I pick the 'perfect' apple from the front of the pile. Should I start asking for the 'ugly' stuff they're about to toss?

Wow, that's a crazy amount. Just a small thing though, the "sell by" date is actually for the store to know when to pull it. It's not about safety. The "use by" or "best by" date is the one for customers. So that produce is probably even better than you think. Some stores do have ugly produce bins or discount racks right before closing. It never hurts to ask the manager if they'd sell you some of that boxed-up stuff at a deep discount.

Oh man, I feel this so hard. It's such a bummer seeing perfectly good food get tossed when you know it's still fine to eat. I've had cashiers look at me weird when I ask about the stuff they're about to throw away, but honestly, what's the harm in asking? A few weeks ago I got a huge bag of bananas that were just starting to get spots for like a dollar, and I made banana bread with them that night. It really does pay to be polite and just ask, even if you get a no sometimes.

Ever tried asking for that discount and gotten a flat no?
