Realized I was tipping delivery drivers wrong for 6 months

I always just hit the 15% button on the app for food deliveries, thinking that was fine. Then last week my regular driver Dave from DoorDash mentioned he only gets $2 base pay per order in our town of Spokane. I did the math and realized my $3 tip on a $20 meal was barely covering his gas for the 8 mile trip. How do you guys figure out what a fair tip actually is for delivery people?

wait, did your friend ever figure out what the right amount is? my buddy jake in cleveland said he just tips by miles now, like $1 per mile for gas plus a couple bucks extra.
