My neighbor's package got delivered to my porch in Tucson last week and I opened it

It was addressed to my house number but the name was wrong, and I just tore into it without looking (I was expecting a new phone charger). Inside was a pair of expensive running shoes. I know the popular thing is to just re-seal it and walk it over, but I called the company and had them send a return label instead. I didn't want my neighbor thinking I was the one who messed up their order. Does that make me a bad person for not just handing it over?

Honestly, that's some next-level neighbor avoidance. Could've just tossed the shoes over the fence and been done with it.

Saw a whole thread about this exact thing on Reddit last month. A lot of people said returning it through the company is actually the cleaner move. That way the shipping record is updated and the neighbor gets a brand new, untouched pair. Handing over an opened box can be awkward, even if you mean well. The company just sends out another one, no big deal.
