My $40 donation to a local animal rescue felt good but I'm not sure it helped
I gave the money at a grocery store table, but they couldn't tell me exactly where it goes. Now I wonder if I should just buy supplies and drop them off instead. Does anyone research these small charity drives before giving?

My buddy Tom gave $50 to a roadside firefighter boot drive last year. Turns out it was a total scam, some random guys with a bucket. He checks charity ratings online for everything now.

How did I not question this stuff before? I used to drop cash in every jar without a second thought, feeling like I did my good deed. Then my sister pointed out a "local youth sports" box at our gas station that had no town name or contact info, just a blurry photocopied sign. It hit me that I was just hoping for the best. Now I at least look for a website or a registered name before I give, even if it takes an extra minute on my phone.

Yeah, it's like we're trained to feel good about quick donations but never to ask the basic questions. I saw a donation bin at the mall last month for "kids in need," but the logo looked homemade. It makes me pause every time now, even at the grocery store checkout when they ask for a dollar. How do you even start to check a small charity like that?
