I was reading a city budget report and found out my town spends more on lawn care for municipal buildings than it does on the public library.
Has anyone else stumbled on a local fact that made you question where the money actually goes?

Ugh, that's why I started going to budget meetings.

Found out my town bought a single decorative clock for a traffic circle that cost more than the annual budget for the park benches. Makes you wonder if they're just trying to pretty up the place so you don't notice the potholes. My own budget priorities aren't much better though, I spent more on fancy coffee last month than I did on laundry.

i dont know, people get so worked up about this stuff but a clock in a traffic circle is probably gonna last longer than park benches that get wrecked by weather and kids in two years. plus benches are a dime a dozen, you can get a decent one for a couple hundred bucks. clocks that are supposed to be nice and visible and match the feel of a town square are a different thing entirely. the real question is whether that clock has a cool pendulum or maybe lights up at night, cause that kind of thing actually makes a place look nicer than a bunch of rusty benches nobody sits on. its not like they stole the money from the pothole fund either, its a separate budget line item half the time. maybe its just me but a nice town clock feels more like a landmark than a bench ever could.
