Actually, some bar soaps are made for faces now and are pretty gentle. It really depends on the specific formula.

That's actually pretty harsh for most skin types. Bar soap can really strip away natural oils and leave your face feeling tight and dry. It often has a high pH that disrupts the skin's protective barrier. A gentle cleanser made for the face would be a much better choice for keeping skin healthy.
