A call at the old Grandview Hotel taught me to always check the pit first
Got a late night call for a stuck car on the 8th floor, and the hotel manager was freaking out. Spent an hour checking the controller and motor, only to find a whole wedding cake, box and all, had fallen down the hoistway and jammed the guide rails at the bottom. The bride had left it in the hall for the morning. Now I pop that pit door open before I even look at the machine room. Anyone else had a pit find that made you feel a bit silly?

Honestly that's a pretty funny story but feels like a one in a million thing. Tbh checking the pit first every single time seems like overkill.

Yeah it's totally overkill for most people. But when you've had that one weird thing happen to you, it just gets stuck in your head forever. You end up doing the weird check every single time just for your own peace of mind. Makes you feel a little crazy but also like you're covered if it ever happens again.

The one time you skip the weird check is the exact time the universe laughs at you. People call it overkill until their stove accidentally gets left on or their front door is somehow unlocked after they swear they locked it. Better to look crazy for an extra 30 seconds than wish you had later.
