Unpopular opinion: I used to think taping was just a messy step you rush through

I was talking to an old timer named Ray at the supply house last week, and he said something that stuck with me. He was buying a specific 6-inch taping knife, the kind with the flexible blade, and I joked about him being picky. He looked me dead in the eye and said, 'Son, the mud is your signature. A bad finish shows forever.' He told me about a job he did 20 years ago where he rushed the tape on a ceiling, and every time he drives past that house, he still sees the shadow of a bad joint in the right light. It hit different because I've been guilty of slapping mud on just to get to sanding, thinking primer will hide it. Now I'm slowing down, really bedding that tape and focusing on my knife work. Has anyone else had a moment that made them change a basic habit like that?

Yeah man, Ray's right. I started using a pan instead of a hawk for taping, forces you to load the knife properly. Made a huge difference on those long seams.
