The mudding trick everyone swears by failed me on a condo job in Denver

I was working a 12-unit condo project in downtown Denver last fall and everyone kept telling me to use hot mud for the first coat on butt joints. Said it would save me time waiting for it to dry. Well I mixed it up, slapped it on, and by the time I got to the third joint the first one was already setting up hard. Had to chip off half of it and start over with regular all-purpose compound. Lost a whole afternoon because of that advice. Has anyone else had hot mud go bad on them mid-session?

Mix hot mud again and you'll be chipping drywall into retirement.

Funny thing is, fast-setting mud actually has its place if you're doing patch work and need to get back to texture in 20 minutes. The trick is just knowing when to use it and when to stick with all-purpose.
