Flat box trick saved me 2 hours on a ceiling patch job last week
Been fighting with sagging mud on ceiling repairs forever. Last week I tried something dumb - I grabbed a flat box instead of my usual hawk and trowel for a 2x3 foot patch. Loaded it up with hot mud and just went at it like I was doing a wall. The mud stayed put way better since the box keeps more pressure on the compound. Finished the whole thing in like 45 minutes instead of the 3 hours I usually waste. Anyone else ever tried using gear for the wrong job and it actually worked better?

@wells.reese Try it with a medium nap roller tray next time, spreads even flatter.

Wait you used a flat box on a ceiling? Like a 12 inch flat box right? Not a knockdown or something? Dude that is actually kind of genius. I've been doing drywall for 15 years and I never thought to try that. The way the box keeps even pressure on the mud must keep it from sagging off the trowel like it does on a hawk. I'm gonna try this tomorrow on a small patch I've been dreading. Thanks for blowing my mind man.
