PSA: My neighbor's 'how was your day' question changed how I ask things
I was talking to my neighbor Lou last Tuesday after he got home from his shift, and instead of asking 'how was work' like I always do, he said 'what was the one thing that surprised you today?'. It hit different because it forced a real answer instead of the usual 'fine' or 'busy'. Anyone else got a go-to question that actually gets people to open up instead of dodging?

The 'one thing that surprised you' is a good one. I tried it on my buddy and he just stared at me for ten seconds before saying 'the price of eggs,' which is fair. That's about the level of insight I get out of people, honestly.

Try asking "What pissed you off today?" instead. Works every time.
