My vintage dredge pump restore job questions the seal inspection norm

I spent my weekends getting an old pump back in shape. Everyone says to inspect seals so often, but mine held up fine with less looking. Do you guys stick to the book or go by feel?

Ever skipped a check and paid for it later? My buddy's pump seized up last year from exactly that.

But what if you actually know your gear well enough to spot issues before they blow? @sage_fisher29, my old foreman ran pumps for 30 years and said the manual's schedule is for the new guys. He caught a failing bearing just by the sound change during a walk-by, weeks before the scheduled check. Sometimes experience beats the calendar, lol.

But what happens when your luck runs out? You got away with it this time but seals can fail fast and wreck everything. Those inspection rules exist because someone learned the hard way, right? Going by feel seems smart until you're the guy buying a new pump instead of just checking a seal.
