TIL I was wrong about using the same lead for all my detail views
For years I just used a 0.5mm mechanical pencil for everything, thinking consistency was key. A senior drafter in my office saw my work last Tuesday and quietly handed me a 0.3mm for the fine hatching, and the clarity difference on the print was instant. Anyone have a favorite brand for those super fine leads that don't snap constantly?

Oh man, you were using a 0.5 for hatching? That's like trying to do surgery with a brick. No wonder the senior drafter did a quiet intervention. I bet your prints looked like a toddler scribbled in the margins before the switch.

That "clarity difference on the print" is so real. I did the same thing with a 0.7 for way too long (it just felt sturdy, you know?). Switched to a 0.3 for small notes and dimensions on my sketches, and it was like wiping fog off a window. I still keep a 0.5 for the main lines, but the fine stuff needs its own tool. I'm pretty loyal to Pentel Ain Stein leads now, they seem to hold up better in the thin sizes without the constant breaking.
