Built a planter box on my patio and learned a hard lesson about drainage.
Made a cedar box last weekend. Filled it with soil and planted herbs. First rain came down hard on Tuesday. Woke up to a mudslide on my concrete patio. Realized I forgot to drill holes in the bottom. Had to empty the whole thing and start over. Anyone know a good way to add drainage after the fact?

lilyb27's friend had the right idea honestly. Tip it on its side and drill from the bottom up so the holes are clean. I'd add a layer of gravel or those little drainage rocks under the soil this time too, it helps stop the mud situation.

Oh man, my buddy did the exact same thing with a big tomato planter! He ended up using a big drill bit to carefully make a bunch of holes from the bottom while the box was tipped on its side. He put some wire mesh over the new holes first to keep the soil from washing out. It worked but he said it was a messy job.
