Was at a hardware store in Portland and saw they don't even sell manual drill braces in the main aisle anymore, just cordless stuff. Felt weird.

Yeah, I ran into that last fall. Needed to fix an old door frame and my cordless just wouldn't do the angle. Ended up asking an older guy who worked there, and he took me to this little corner in the back, past the plumbing supplies. They had two dusty ones on a bottom shelf. Felt like finding a secret. I bought one just to have it. Sometimes the old way is just the right tool.

Remember reading a blog post from a carpenter who said cordless tools made us forget about leverage and angles. He argued keeping one manual drill in your kit isn't about being old school, it's about having the right feel for the job. That moment you described, finding the tool, totally lines up with his point. Sometimes you need that direct control a battery drill just can't give you. Buying it just to have it is smart, honestly.

That hidden corner is the real hardware store.
