Thinking about how my grandpa's garage rules shaped our family...

He had this rule that every kid had to learn to change a flat tire before they could drive. We'd all gather out there on Saturdays, passing around the jack and lug wrench. Nowadays, with roadside assistance apps, that skill feels almost forgotten. I still make my son do it, just to keep the tradition alive...

But honestly, how many of us actually need to change a tire these days? My car has run-flats, and I've used roadside assist twice. It's fine. It's like knowing how to start a fire with flint, cool skill, but I've got a lighter. The basics keep changing. My grandpa probably didn't know how to reboot a router, but that's a basic now.

Read that fewer people know basic car stuff now.

New cars with all digital dashboards don't even have dipsticks to check oil. It's all sensors and warnings now, so you never learn the basics.
