Question about mixing joint compound for a smooth finish

I always just scooped it from the bucket until a guy at the supply house in Boise said 'mix it like pancake batter for 90 seconds'. Tried it on a patch last weekend and the difference is wild, no more tiny lumps. Anyone have a favorite paddle mixer they use for this?

My old cordless drill finally died after mixing a whole five-gallon bucket.

That drill earned its retirement, that's for sure. There's something satisfying about a tool that goes out still working hard instead of just sitting in a drawer.

What kind of drill were you using for that? That's a serious job for a cordless tool. Sounds like it went out in a blaze of glory.
