Debate: Should you trust a contractor who gives a super low bid or run the other way?

I had a guy quote me $3,200 to redo my deck in Columbus last spring, and another came in at $5,800 for the same job. I went with the lower one and he cut corners on the joist spacing, now the boards are sagging after six months. Is a higher bid a sign of honesty or just greed?

Did he show you his license and insurance before you signed the contract?

Actually he didn't show me anything until after I asked twice.
