Visited my aunt's place last Sunday and her dishwasher has a literal garden growing in the bottom rack

Ngl, I opened it up to help her figure out why nothing was getting clean and there was mold and a tiny sprout of something growing out of the filter area. Has anyone else dealt with a dishwasher that basically became a planter?

My aunt's Kenmore from 2017 had the same thing, but it's actually not a garden it's just bioslime and a seed that somehow survived. The "sprout" you saw was probably a bean or lentil that escaped the top rack and landed in the filter. If you pull that filter out and soak it in vinegar overnight it should kill everything, then run a cycle with a cup of bleach on the top rack. You have to clean those filters every month or they turn into a science experiment.
