Tried the vinegar rinse trick after years of ignoring it
I always thought pouring vinegar in the bottom was just an old wives tale, not real maintenance. Did it on a whim last week after my filter got crusty and the water actually cleared up for the first time in months. Has anyone else been surprised by a fix they thought was fake?

Just keep an eye on that vinegar for a couple weeks and see if the crusting comes back faster than before. I had the same thing happen and ended up having to do a deeper clean with a brush and some baking soda paste to really get the scale off the heating element. The vinegar rinse works but it's usually a temporary fix if the buildup has been going on for a while.

How much scale are we talking about here? I had a similar issue with my espresso machine where it looked like someone sprinkled dandruff all over the heating element, and the vinegar soak barely touched it. Did you have to actually scrape the paste off with something, or was it more of a gentle scrubbing situation? Trying to figure out if I should commit to the full brush workout or just try another round of vinegar first.
