Rant: My 12 year old dishwasher finally gave up on a Tuesday night

Last Tuesday around 8 PM, I heard a grinding noise from the kitchen. Opened the door and found a pool of gray water with bits of food floating in it. That machine came with the house when we bought it back in 2012, so it had a good run. I think the pump just died after all these years of hard water and heavy loads. Now I'm stuck hand-washing for a week while I save up for a replacement. Has anyone else had a long-time machine quit at the worst possible moment?

Read somewhere that dishwashers last about 10 years on average, so you got your money's worth with that one. Hand-washing for a week is brutal, but beats a flooded kitchen.

10 years is honestly impressive for a dishwashers these days. Most of them are built with cheap plastic parts now that crack way before that. Hand washing is annoying but half the time I wonder if people are overreacting to a little water leak. A few towels on the floor and you are good until the repair person shows up. Sounds like Jenny got lucky with her timing since a flood would have been way worse.
