My neighbor's comment about my dishwasher drain hose changed everything

I had been fighting with my dishwasher leaving standing water for months. My neighbor saw me pulling it out for the 4th time and just said 'you know that hose needs to loop up right?' I had it running straight into the disposal with no high loop at all. After 3 tries with different drain pumps I finally fixed it with zero parts cost. The water just flows back in from the sink without that loop. Has anyone else dealt with a simple fix that made you feel silly afterwards?

Honestly, that bit about zip tying it to the cabinet is genius. I did something similar with my portable AC unit last summer, had the drain hose just dangling into a bucket and wondering why it kept overflowing every few hours. Took me two weeks to realize the hose needed a constant downward slope, not just a kinked mess on the floor. @wood.noah hit the nail on the head about stuff we overlook when we're frustrated, because once I taped that hose to the wall at a steady angle it worked perfect and I felt like a total fool for not trying that first.

Man I did the EXACT same thing with my washing machine of all things. Had it leaking water all over the floor for WEEKS and kept replacing seals and hoses for nothing. My brother in law came over one day and just pointed at the drain hose and said "that needs to be higher than the drum." I felt like a COMPLETE idiot when I lifted it up and zip tied it to the cabinet and the problem just vanished. Sometimes the simplest stuff is the stuff we overlook the most when we're frustrated.
