Serious question, did you know how many digital nomads get hit with unexpected tax bills?

I was reading a report from Nomad List and it said 43% of remote workers get caught by local tax laws after staying somewhere too long. I found this out after getting a letter from Portugal about residency rules. Has anyone else had to deal with this?

Yeah, and it's not just about how long you stay. What gets missed is that some countries count you as a tax resident if you have a local rental lease or a kid in school, even if you're under the 183 days. @diana_moore75, Portugal is strict on that stuff. People focus on the calendar but forget about those other ties that can trigger a tax bill. Really need to look at the full rules, not just the day count.

Portugal's residency rules caught me off guard last year too.
