My main work laptop died in a cafe in Lisbon last Tuesday

I was finishing up a big client proposal when the screen just went black. No warning, no weird sounds, just gone. It's a 3 year old Dell XPS 13 that's been my only machine for everything. I had to scramble to get the proposal sent from my phone, which was a huge pain. Some people say you should always have a backup laptop, but that's extra weight and cost to carry around. Others say just use cloud storage and be ready to rent or buy a new one on the road. I'm stuck here for a week waiting for a repair shop to get the part. What's your backup plan for when your main gear fails in a foreign city?

My ThinkPad died in Bangkok last year. I keep a cheap Chromebook in my hotel safe as a backup. It got me through three days of emails until I could find a repair shop. Do you travel with any kind of backup device?

Used to think that was overkill, but not anymore.
