My laptop charger fried itself in a Chiang Mai cafe last Tuesday... had to pay $90 for a new one from a sketchy shop.

Oof, that "sketchy shop" price is rough. I always carry a universal adapter with replaceable tips now after mine blew out in Bangkok. Saved me a couple times.

My adapter from a gas station in Rome cost like 3 euros and it's worked fine for five years now. People make it sound like you need some special travel gear but most places sell the basics. I've seen those universal ones fail too when the little pins get loose. Sometimes the cheap simple plug is all you actually need.

That cheap plug ever give you any trouble with overheating or sparking?
