I finally found a way to get a decent phone signal in rural Costa Rica
My problem was working from a small town near Monteverde where the main carrier's data was basically useless. After a week of trying, I bought a local Kolbi prepaid SIM and a cheap signal booster from a shop in San Jose for about $40. It's not perfect, but I can now hold a video call for a full hour without it dropping. Has anyone else found a good fix for spotty signals in Central America?

That's actually a cell phone repeater, not a booster. The difference is you need a decent outside signal for it to work with. Glad it solved your problem though, those Kolbi SIMs are usually the best bet out there.

Saw a blog post where someone used a cheap external antenna on their roof for the same problem. That Kolbi SIM is pretty much the only thing that works out there.
