Tried to save a buck on a water pump, ended up stranded on I-35

Last Tuesday I figured I'd throw a cheap rebuilt water pump on my F-650 instead of shelling out $250 for a new one. Made it about 12 miles down I-35 before the bearing seized up and the fan exploded through the radiator. Had to call a buddy with a flatbed to haul me back to the shop, cost me more in time and a new radiator than if I'd just bought the good part.

Cheap parts always cost more in the long run.

Oh absolutely, you nailed it! I learned this the hard way when I grabbed a budget power supply for my PC build (thought I was being smart saving money). It started making this weird buzzing noise after like three months, then just died completely and took my hard drive with it. So I spent twice as much replacing both, which basically proved your point with a painful real-world example.
