I switched from a traditional bank to a credit union 5 years ago after my savings account fees hit $12 a month.

I figured I'd lose features or convenience, but I actually saved about $60 in fees over the first year - has anyone else made the jump and found hidden costs they didn't expect?

Tbh I didn't realize banks were still charging that much.

terry_walker I read somewhere that some people actually lose money switching because credit unions don't always have the same atm networks or online bill pay features. In my experience I had to switch my direct deposit and update a few autopays which was a hassle for a week. But after that I've been fee free for years now. One thing I'd watch out for is if you travel a lot, some smaller credit unions refund atm fees but others don't. Your mileage may vary but I'd say try a local one for a couple months before fully committing.
