The week I paid off $2,800 in credit card debt then had the fridge die the next day

I was on cloud nine Tuesday after making the final payment on my Visa balance, then Wednesday morning the compressor in my fridge gave out and I had to put $400 on a new one that's now on a store card. Has anyone else had something like this happen right after a big payoff?

Girl, the universe has a sick sense of humor (or maybe just a really bad fridge timing app). You pay off one thing and bam, something else breaks like it's been waiting for that exact moment. I did the same thing last year with my car insurance - paid the whole six months in one go, and the check engine light came on the very next morning. It's like the world sees you're finally ahead and says "hold my beer." The kicker is you put that new fridge on a store card, so now it's a whole other debt to start chipping away at, just like the credit card was. I really hope this is the last surprise for a while, because you deserve at least a solid month of boring old working appliances.

What always helped me was keeping a small emergency fund just for stuff like this. I put fifty bucks a paycheck into a separate savings account and it saved me when my washing machine died. You might try setting aside whatever you can each week, even if it's just ten or twenty dollars. That way when the next thing breaks, you won't have to put it on a card.
