Warning: Jumping from retail to food service is not a step up it's a different kind of trap
I left a dead end retail job at Target after 2 years thinking fast food would be better because the pay was $1.50 more an hour. Instead I got greasy uniforms, no set schedule, and a manager who screamed at me for taking 30 seconds to grab a mop. Sure the money looks better on paper but you're trading one misery for another, am I right?

It really depends on the specific location honestly. Some fast food places are chill and others are a nightmare, same as retail. The whole "trap" thing feels a bit dramatic when you could have just quit again after a week if it was that bad. People act like every job choice is permanent or something. Plenty of folks do fine in food service without losing their minds over a mop situation. Maybe it's just a bad manager problem not a whole industry problem.

Totally agree with you @alice121, it comes down to the individual spot not the whole industry. Had a buddy who worked at two different burger places in the same town and one was laid back while the other was a total zoo. People act like fast food is some unavoidable doom when really you can just walk out and try somewhere else.
