That 2 a.m. shift at the gas station changed how I see customers

Was working the overnight at a Shell on Route 17 in Paramus last Tuesday. Some guy came in at 2:15 a.m., bought a pack of gum, and actually thanked me for being there. Made me realize we spend all our time waiting for the angry ones to ruin our night, but most people are just trying to get through it the same way we are. Anybody else have a random nice customer come out of nowhere and throw off your whole mood in a good way?

Guy once bought me a coffee on the graveyard shift last winter. Really caught me off guard.

And it's wild how one small thing like that can totally flip your whole outlook, because we're all just walking around in our own little bubbles thinking everyone else is out to get us. But really most people are just tired or distracted or worried about their own stuff, not actively trying to be mean. So when someone breaks through that bubble with a simple "thanks" or a coffee, it's this reminder that the quiet kindness is actually way more common than we give it credit for.
