Spent $75 on a 'motivational' desk toy and it backfired spectacularly

I bought this little metal fidget spinner thing for my cubicle, thinking it would help with the boredom. My manager saw it and decided it meant I had 'extra mental bandwidth'. Now I'm stuck training every new hire on the worst parts of the job, which is just data entry. It's been three weeks of this and I regret that purchase so much. Anyone else have a small buy that accidentally made work worse?

Read a story about a guy who bought a fancy pen.

Notice how many things we buy now are just for the feeling, not the job. That pen story is part of a bigger thing where the normal version works fine, but we want the fancy one. It turns basic stuff into a hobby you can spend money on, like socks or notebooks. Makes you wonder what simple thing gets turned into a luxury item next.
