Serious question, why does nobody check the postage meter before shipping?

I work in a mailroom in Cleveland and I keep seeing people slap labels on boxes without checking the scale. My coworker sent a 5 pound package with 3 ounces of postage last Tuesday and the recipient got charged like $15 extra. How do you miss something that simple? Is your manager just never around to catch this stuff either?

Had a guy in our place try to mail a toolbox with a single stamp on it once. The box literally said "FRAGILE" on all sides but he thought the stamp would cover the 12 pounds of wrenches inside lol. Manager was two desks away scrolling through Facebook.

Gotta say @grant_cooper I'm kinda side-eyeing this one lol. Like yeah it's dumb to think a single stamp covers 12 pounds of tools but does it really matter that much in the grand scheme of things? I mean the guy probably just didn't know better, not everyone works at a shipping place. Plus if the mail actually got delivered who cares, right? Feels like a lot of fuss over something that probably took two seconds to fix.
