My manager told me 'ambition is a liability' during my review at the Oakwood office

We were in that tiny beige room on the second floor, and I asked about moving up to a lead role. He leaned back and said, 'Lisa, in a place like this, ambition is a liability. Just keep your head down.' That was six months ago, and I've been looking for a new job ever since. Has anyone else had a boss just flat-out tell you there's no future where you are?

Yeah, "ambition is a liability" is a wild thing to hear. My friend had a boss tell him "we don't do promotions here" when he asked about a senior title. The boss said the only way up was if someone above you quit or died. He found a new job within a month. Some places just want you to stay in your lane forever.

Honestly @sethtorres, that's so messed up but I believe it. My buddy's old manager told him straight up that wanting more responsibility showed he "wasn't a team player." They basically wanted a robot to do the one task forever. He got out of there fast and makes way more now at a place that actually likes when people try to improve. Some companies are just scared of anyone who might change things.
