Googled my own job title and found out I make 40% less than average

Was bored at 3pm yesterday, no customers, just staring at the register. Typed "retail floor associate salary" into my phone under the counter. Turns out the national average is like $18 an hour. I've been here 2 years making $12.50. My manager told me "we pay competitively" when I started. Guess competitive means competing with the bottom. Has anyone else looked up their pay and felt sick about it?

Yo the national average is probably closer to $15-$16 depending on where you live, not $18. I've been in retail too and those websites aren't always up to date or accurate for your specific area. $12.50 after 2 years is still rough though, you're getting played.

Yeah man, you might be right about that. I always assumed those salary sites were pretty accurate but hearing your experience makes me think they're not as reliable as I thought lol. Guess I gotta look up local data instead of whatever pops up first on Google.
