Why does nobody talk about how awful grocery store avocados are 9 times out of 10?

I bought three at the Safeway on 5th street last Wednesday for $3.50, cut them open that night, and all three were either rock hard or full of brown stringy veins, has anyone else just given up and started only buying them from farmers markets?

Try soaking them in salt water for 10 minutes right after you buy them, it firms up the texture and stops them from going brown so fast.
