Hot take: Most people forget to season their cutting boards

I finally hit 6 months with my end-grain board from a little shop in Portland, and it's still flat and smooth. Everyone I know just wipes theirs down with soap and water, but you gotta oil it every 4 weeks or it'll dry out and crack. Took me three ruined boards to figure that out. Anybody else find their board drying out faster in winter?

Used to just hit mine with soap and water and wondered why they all warped, but this made me grab some mineral oil and now my board actually lasts.

Oh man, I did the exact same thing for way too long! Soap and water feels like it should work because it's what we use for everything else in the kitchen, right? I finally switched to a bamboo board that came with its own little care kit and that's when I realized how bad I was messing up my old ones. Now I just wipe mine down with a damp cloth and a little vinegar, then oil it once a month or so. Makes such a difference in how long they last.
