Noticed a weird pattern with Prime Day pricing this year

I was browsing some electronics last week and saw a laptop listed at $1200 with a "was $1800" tag. I remembered seeing that same model at Best Buy for $1100 three weeks ago. It feels like some retailers bump up the regular price right before the sale so the discount looks bigger. Has anyone else caught this happening on specific products?

My friend got a "deal" on a Samsung TV last Prime Day that was literally the same price it had been at Target for two months before. It's just marketing, people freak out over the crossed out number and don't question it.

Check the price history on camelcamelcamel before any sale.
