Overheard a contractor say 'nothing's ever level' and it changed how I hang shelves

I was at Lowe's last weekend picking up paint samples and this older contractor was telling a young guy that chasing perfect level on old walls is a waste of time. He said if your shelf looks level to the eye, that's good enough because trim and floors are never truly level either. It hit me because I've spent hours shimming shelves in my rental units and still gotten complaints. Has anyone else had to stop being a perfectionist on old construction?

Hell yeah, "looks level to the eye" is the only way to go on old houses.

That "looks level to the eye" part really shifted my thinking too.
