Am I the only one who noticed the bakery on Maple Street is a total ripoff now?
I stopped into Sweet Rise Bakery downtown yesterday for a loaf of sourdough. They wanted $9 for a single half-loaf that was smaller than my hand. Last year the same loaf was $5 and it actually had decent crust. I asked the girl at the counter if the recipe changed and she just shrugged at me. Who else has seen prices go up while quality tanks at local spots? Has anyone found a bakery that still bakes real bread under $6?

Wait, $9 for a half loaf? I think you might be mixing up the half loaf with their full size. Sweet Rise actually charges $6.50 for the half sourdough, not $9, unless you're talking about the seeded one which is a different recipe. I was in there two days ago and grabbed a full loaf for $7.50 which felt more reasonable. The girl at the counter probably didn't know because they just hired a new head baker a few months back who changed the starter they use, so the crust has been off lately. Their prices went up like everyone else but the quality dip is definitely real with that new sourdough recipe.

I read a piece in the local paper a couple weeks ago that said Sweet Rise got bought out by one of those bigger bakery groups that runs a few places across the state. They kept the name and most of the staff but brought in their own head baker with a different method. Sounds like that new starter is the problem. The lady I talked to at the farmers market who used to buy their flour said the group cut a deal with a cheaper supplier, which is probably why the crust doesn't have that same tang and chew it used to. You can usually spot a cost-cutting move like that when the texture changes before the price jumps.
