A framer told me my layout was off by 3/16 and it clicked

I’ve been doing trim work for about 4 years now and always prided myself on being close enough. Last job a framer came through and pointed out my scribe for a baseboard was off a hair. He spent 5 minutes showing me how to hold the pencil at the right angle instead of guessing. Changed my whole approach on inside corners now I measure twice and scribe once. That little tweak saved me from patching gaps on the last three rooms I did. Anyone else get a random tip from a stranger that just stuck?

That "close enough" trap is real... it's easy to get comfortable until someone shows you exactly where you're losing the fraction. The pencil angle trick is gold, I've been using a sharpened carpenter pencil with the fat side against the wall for years and it cuts out the guesswork completely. Once you stop fighting those tiny gaps you start looking for them everywhere.

Hold on, do you sharpen those carpenter pencils on both sides or just the one? I've been using a standard round pencil but this has me thinking I need to switch it up.
