That time my IT buddy told me I was an idiot for reusing passwords

My buddy Mike works in cybersecurity for a company over in Portland, and last month he saw me logging into my bank with the same password I use for a cooking forum. He straight up said 'you're leaving the door wide open for anyone who scrapes that forum database.' I changed all my important accounts that same night, started using a password manager, and enabled two-factor on my email and bank. Has anyone else had a friend call them out on bad habits like that?

You ever think about how your password habits say more about the websites you visit than about you? Like the fact that you used the same password for a cooking forum and your bank means you trusted that forum not to get hacked. But those small sites are exactly the ones that get breached all the time cause they don't have security budgets. Your buddy was right to call you out, but honestly most people don't realize how many random sites they've given their password to over the years. It's not just about being lazy, it's about not knowing which sites are actually secure enough to trust with your login. That's why password managers are so clutch, they let you have a unique password for every site without having to remember them all.

Yeah it's wild how that pattern shows up everywhere. Like people reuse passwords for the same reason they use the same key for their front door, their gym locker, and a storage unit they forgot about. It's not even about being careless, it's just that convenience always wins in the moment. Then one random site gets popped and suddenly your bank login is floating around on some shady forum. That's the thing about security, it always feels like overkill until you actually get burned. I used to be the same way until I had to change like 30 accounts overnight after a breach. Now I just let my password manager handle it, no way I'm remembering 100 different combos anyway.
