PSA: Public wifi at the Flying J in Omaha nearly got my accounts wiped
Stopped for a load break at the Flying J off I-80 in Omaha last Tuesday. Connected to their free wifi to check my dispatch email and a popup instantly tried to download something that looked like a PDF. Clicked out of it fast but my bank flagged a login attempt from a different state 10 minutes later. After that I run a VPN on my phone and laptop every time now. Any truckers here use a specific mobile hotspot instead of risking truck stop wifi?

T-Mobile hotspot is worth every penny. Truck stop wifi is just asking for trouble.

Hang on, truck stop wifi isn't always a total disaster. I've used it a few times when I had no other option, and it worked fine for basic stuff like checking email or loading a map. The real problem is those public networks can get you hacked or steal your info, that's what makes them risky. T-Mobile hotspot is definitely safer but it's not like every truck stop connection is automatically a trap.
