My uncle insisted on a password manager for years and I finally gave in
He kept saying my old method of using a base word with variations was weak. Last month, a site I signed up for in 2021 got breached and my reused password got out. I got alerts for login attempts on three other accounts within a day. Setting up the manager was annoying, but it definitely stopped the domino effect. Anyone else have a stubborn habit they had to break for security?

Wait, doesn't a password manager just put all your eggs in one basket though? If that one master password gets out or the service has a problem, you're totally locked out or everything is gone. My base word system felt safer because even if one thing leaked, it wasn't a master key. I get the convenience, but that single point of failure really worries me.

Oh man, the "base word with variations" method. I was the queen of that. My base was "coffee" and I thought adding "123" for my bank and "!@#" for my email was top-tier security (it was not). Your uncle was right.
