Wish I'd known about free credit monitoring 10 years ago. Paid $200 for a scam service.

Jumping right in, those scam credit monitoring places are the worst. I got burned by one years ago too, thought I was being smart and ended up paying for basically nothing. Lesson learned the hard way, now I just use the free stuff from Credit Karma or my bank. It's wild how many people don't realize there's free options that do the same thing. Wish I'd known earlier too, would've saved me a couple hundred bucks and a lot of headache.

Oh man, I feel you on that. Same thing happened to me with one of those "free trial" ones that ended up charging my card for months before I noticed. Solidarity in getting burned by those shady places.

@lisa_hill23 I totally get that. What finally worked for me was calling my bank and having them block any new charges from that company on my card. Then I switched to the free credit monitoring my bank already offered, which honestly does the same stuff without the sneaky fees. I also set a calendar reminder every month to check my statements, just in case something slips through again. It's a pain but way better than finding out months later.
