Why does nobody talk about how medical bills hit your credit score differently?

I just read on Credit Karma that unpaid medical bills under $500 don't show up on your credit report anymore as of 2023. But I had a $300 x-ray bill from urgent care in Nashville that tanked my score by 40 points back in 2022. How is anyone supposed to know these rules change every few years? Has anyone else gotten dinged for small medical stuff before the new rule kicked in?

Tanked my score by 40 points back in 2022" - that's just insane honestly.

Oh man, I used to be one of those people who thought credit scores were just some arbitrary number banks made up to confuse us. I honestly rolled my eyes every time someone talked about them. But then I had a situation a few years back where I missed a couple payments on a small card I forgot about, and my score dropped over 50 points. That was a REAL wake-up call. It completely changed my mind about how serious this stuff is, and now I check my score every month like it's my job.

Missed a couple payments and dropped 50 points" - that's seriously rough, I've been there lol. After my own credit scare I started using a free tracking app that sends me alerts before anything hits my report. Honestly, setting up automatic payments for even small minimums saved me from forgetting again. Also learned the hard way that closing old cards can hurt your score too, so now I just use them once every few months to keep them active. One tip that helped me was paying twice a month instead of once, since credit utilization updates more often than youd think. It's a pain but once you get into the habit it just becomes second nature.
