Vent: My buddy at the gym totally changed how I see those 'credit repair' ads

I was on the treadmill a couple months ago, and this guy I lift with sometimes, Mike, was next to me. He saw one of those 'Fix your credit fast!' ads on the gym TV and just shook his head. He told me he paid a company like that over $800 last year. He said they basically just sent dispute letters for every single thing on his report, even accounts he knew were right. It worked for a little bit, but then all the accounts got verified and bounced right back, leaving his score worse than before. He said the guy on the phone promised a 'guarantee' but it was full of fine print. Hearing him say 'I felt like a total sucker' while we were both sweating really stuck with me. I was thinking about calling one of those places, but his story made me look up how to do it myself for free. Has anyone else had a friend talk them out of a bad money move like that?

Man, that's rough, but those disputes can actually help even if they come back.
