My friend swore by those 'credit repair' services and I'm out $500 with nothing to show for it.
They charged me upfront, sent a few generic dispute letters that got rejected, and my score is exactly the same as it was six months ago, so what's a better way to actually fix a 620 score?

Been there, done that, still have the t-shirt with the credit score printed on it as a sad reminder. Those services are a total racket. The real fix is boring but it works. Pay down your credit card balances to under 30% of your limit, get a secured card if you need to build history, and set up autopay so you never miss a bill. It takes time, but it's the only way to actually move the needle.

That's just how all real fixes work.

The part about paying down to under 30% is good general advice, but it's a myth that's a magic number for your score. The scoring models look at all your limits together, not each card. Having one card maxed out can still hurt you even if the total is under 30%. The real goal is to get the total balance as low as you can, ideally under 10%.
