Just talked to my brother about his new car loan and he said his score dropped 40 points after the hard pull.
He thought it would bounce back fast, but it's been stuck for months. Does a single inquiry really tank you that much, or is something else going on?

Wait, is your brother me? My score took a dive like that once and I swore it was just the hard pull. Turns out I'd also let a card balance creep up right around the same time. A single inquiry shouldn't do that much damage on its own, so he might want to check for other changes, like his credit usage. Those two things together can really stick around.

Seen this a lot. People miss the other small changes that happen at the same time, like a higher balance.
